코로나19에 보스턴 마라톤 결국 취소…124년 역사상 처음

 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태 탓에 '4대 메이저 마라톤' 중 하나인 보스턴 마라톤 대회가 취소됐다.

보스턴육상연맹은 28일(현지시간) 올해 9월에 열릴 예정이었던 보스턴 마라톤 대회를 취소한다고 밝혔다.

톰 그릴크 보스턴육상연맹 CEO는 "스태프와 참여자, 자원봉사자, 지지자들뿐 아니라 커뮤니티의 건강을 지키는 것이 최우선 과제"라고 설명했다.

대신 보스턴육상연맹은 대회 참가자가 각각 42.195㎞를 완주하고 인증을 하면 완주 메달을 발급하는 온라인 이벤트를 주최키로 했다.

보스턴 마라톤이 취소된 것은 124년 역사상 처음이다.

올해 보스턴 마라톤은 4월20일 열릴 예정이었지만, 코로나19 사태로 9월14일로 연기됐다.

그러나 보스턴육상연맹은 가을이 되더라도 코로나19 사태가 완전히 해결되기 힘들 것이란 판단 아래 대회 취소를 결정했다.

보스턴 마라톤에는 세계 일류급 마라톤 선수 외에도 3만명가량의 일반인도 참여한다.

지난 3월에 열린 도쿄 마라톤은 3만여명의 아마추어 참가자를 제외하고 200여명의 마라톤 선수들을 대상으로만 치러졌다.

마티 월시 보스턴 시장은 아마추어 참가자를 제외하고 대회를 치르는 방안에 대해 "보스턴 마라톤은 모든 사람들이 참여하는 것"이라고 반대 입장을 밝히기도 했다.

올해를 건너뛰는 보스턴 마라톤은 내년 4월19일에 개최될 예정이다.

Due to Corona 19, Boston Marathon finally canceled...For the first time in 124 years of history

 The Boston Marathon, one of the four major marathons, has been canceled due to the new corona virus infection.

The Boston Athletics Federation confirmed on the 28th that the Boston Marathon scheduled for September this year will be canceled.

 "Our top priority is to protect the health of the community as well as staff, participants, volunteers and supporters." remarked Tom Grillk, CEO of the Boston Athletics Federation. 

Instead, the Boston Athletics Federation decided to host an online event where participants  of the event would be issue a medal if they certified that they ran the 42.195km.

This is the first time in 124 years that the Boston Marathon has been canceled.

This year's Boston Marathon was scheduled for April 20, but was postponed until September 14 due to the Corona 19.

However, the Boston Athletics Federation decided to cancel the event, judging that the Corona 19 incident would not be completely resolved even in the fall.

In addition to world-class marathoners, about 30,000 of the general public participate in the Boston Marathon.

The Tokyo Marathon, which took place last March, was held only for about 200 marathoners, with the exception of some 30,000 amateur runners.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh opposed the idea of holding a contest that ignored amateur participants, saying, "The Boston Marathon is for everyone to participate."

The Boston Marathon, which will canceled this year, will be held on April 19 next year.
