'Parasite’Wins the Oscar for Best Picture, Making History

‘기생충’오스카 최우수 작품상 수상, 역사를 만들다.

Ninety-two years ofOscar history were shattered Sunday night when the South Korean hit “Parasite” became the first film notin the English language to win the Academy Award for best picture.

한국의 명화 ‘기생충’이 비영어 영화로는 처음으로 아카데미 최우수 작품상을 수상하면서 오스카 92년 전통이 산산히 부서졌다.

The class-strugglethriller faced stiff competition for Hollywood’s top trophy from movies thatincluded Quentin Tarantino’s showbiz epic, “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” the billion-dollar comic-book film“Joker” and Martin Scorsese’s Netflix crime drama, “The Irishman.” But “Parasite,” directed by Bong Joon Ho, managed topull off the final win in a moment that had audience members in the DolbyTheater leaping to their feet.

The historic victories made front-page news in SouthKorea, where Baek Young-hoon, 50, a Seoul office worker and avid Bong fannoted, “The South Korean movie industry became 100 years old last year, andthis is a momentous event that makes South Koreans proud.”

In honoring thefilm, which also won best director, original screenplay and internationalfeature, voters managed to simultaneously embrace the future — Hollywood’soverreliance on white stories told by white filmmakers may finally be ebbing —and remain reverential to decades-old tradition: Unlike some other best-picturenominees, “Parasite” was given a conventional release in theaters. It has takenin $35.5 million at the North American box office since its release in October.Global ticket sales stand at $165 million.

The film’s seismicwin came in wake of the #OscarsSoWhite protests in 2015 and 2016 that forcedHollywood to examine its systemic sidelining of minorities. Humiliated by theoutrage that followed its failure to nominate any minority actors for Oscars atthe time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vowed to doubleminority membership by 2020. In 2015, about 8 percent of the academy’s 8,500voters were people of color. The percentage of minority members now stands atroughly 16 percent.

The comedy-thrillerseemed to touch a nerve wherever it played, thanks to its tale of have-notsoutsmarting the haves. At least that’s how it seems at first, when thestruggling Kim family uses a variety of subterfuges to get jobs working in thehousehold of the wealthy Park family.

이 희극 스릴러 영화는 가난한 자들이 가진 자들을 압도하는 줄거리 덕분이 상영되는 곳마다 관람객들의 신경을 거슬리게 하는 것처럼 보인다. 힘겹게 살아가는 김씨 일가가 부유한 박씨 가족의 집에서 일자리를 구하기 위해 다양한 속임수를 쓰는 초반부에서는 적어도 그렇게 보인다.

The cast includedBong’s frequent collaborator Song Kang Ho as the impoverished patriarch, butthe lack of nominations for any of the film’s stars renewed criticism that the academy frequently overlooks Asian actors.Indeed, the best-picture win for “Parasite” was in keeping with tradition inone respect: recent best pictures set in Asia, like “Slumdog Millionaire,” wonwithout any acting nominations.

출연자 중 봉감독과 자주 작품을 같이해온 송강호씨가 가난에 찌든 가장 역할을 맡았다. 하지만 “기생충”의 배우들 중 그 누구도 수상 후보로 오르지 못하자 아카데미가 아시아의 연기자들을 자주 무시한다는 비판이 재연되었다. 실제로, 기생충의 최고 작품상 수상은 최근에 최고 작품상을 받은 ‘슬럼독 밀리어네어에서’와 같이 어떤 배우도 수상 후보로 오르지 못하는 전통을 답습하고 있다.

In pushing for morediverse voting ranks, the academy greatly expanded its foreign contingent, anecessity because Hollywood remains so overwhelmingly white and male. Lastyear, the academy invited 842 film industry professionals to become members,with invitees hailing from 59 countries. About 29 percent were people of color.

The celebration of“Parasite” follows a year in which Oscar voters seemed to retrench toward theirconservative past. In a choice that prompted immediate blowback — from, amongothers, the director Spike Lee, who threw up his hands in frustration andstarted to walk out of the theater — the academy gave the 2019 best-pictureOscar to “Green Book,” a segregation-era buddy film. While admired by some as afeel-good depiction of people uniting against the odds, the movie wascriticized by others as woefully retrograde and borderline bigoted.

기생충의 괘거는 보수적인 과거로부터 멀어지려고 하는 오스카 투표자들의 작년 성향을 잇는 듯 하다. 아카데미는 2019년 인종차별 시대의 친구 영화(buddy movie)인 그린북에 최우수 작품상을 수여하여 즉각적인 반발을 초래하였고 스파이크 리 감독은 실망감으로 수상을 포기하고 극장 밖으로 걸어나갔다. 이 영화는 비참할 정도로 역행적이고 편협한 면이 있다고 비판을 받았지만 한편으로는 역경을 극복하기 위해 힘을 합하는 사람들에 관한 기분 좋은 묘사로 찬사를 받았다.

Without the victoryfor “Parasite,” it was a rather poor year for inclusion at the Oscars. Theacademy barely avoided another #OscarsSoWhite debacle by nominating CynthiaErivo (“Harriet”) for best actress. (She lost to Renée Zellweger for “Judy.”)Once again, all of the nominees for best director were men, despite it havingbeen a banner year for female filmmakers.

With the awards for “Parasite,”Oscar voters slowed the rise of Netflix, which entered the night with afield-leading 24 nominations but left with only two prizes (for supportingactress Laura Dern in “Marriage Story” and the documentary “American Factory”).That was a rebuke, perhaps, to the streaming giant for spending a sultan’s ransom to campaign for votes and for largely bypassing theaters with its films. MartinScorsese’s “The Irishman,” relentlessly hyped by Netflix as “one of the bestfilms of the decade,” went zero for 10.

‘기생충’의 수상을 통해 오스카 유권자들은 넷플릭스의 상승에 제동을 걸었다. 분야를 주도하는 24개의 후보작을 낸 넷플릭스는 ‘매리지 스토리 (결혼 이야기)’에 출연한 로라 던의 조연 여배우상과 기록 영화상을 받은 ‘아메리칸 팩토리 2개작품 밖에 수상하지 못했다. 이는 득표와 대부분 영화관에서 상영되지 않는 행위에 대해 막대한 돈을 쏟아 부은 스트리밍 공룡에 대한 반발로 보인다. “10년 중 최고의 영화”라고 넷플릭스가 끊임없이 선전하 마틴 스코세이지의 ‘더 아이리시맨 (그 아이리시 남자)’는 10표 중 한표도 받지 못했다.

Many punditsfigured the best-picture Oscar would go to the war drama“1917,” which had amassedthe most significant trophies until now, including a Golden Globe for bestdrama and the top prizes from two major industry guilds, the Producers Guild ofAmerica and the Directors Guild of America. The last film to score with allthree of those groups but still miss out on best picture was “La La Land,”which fell to “Moonlight” three years ago on Oscar night.

Still, “Parasite”had shown impressive strength all season, and not just at the box office. Themovie won the prestigious Palme d’Or at theCannes Film Festival in May, theGolden Globe for best foreign film last month, the Writers Guild Award for itsoriginal screenplay, and a best-ensemble prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards — the first time in its history that the performers’organization had given its top trophy to a foreign-language film. At thatceremony last month, the “Parasite” actors received a standing ovation whenthey came out to present a clip from the film, a sign that passion for thetwisty thriller ran deep.

Bong, whose creditsinclude “Okja” and “Snowpiercer,” proved to be one of the season’s most popularpresences: a Golden Globes party touting “Parasite” even drew well-wishers fromcompeting films, like the “Once Upon a Time” star Leonardo DiCaprio and the“Marriage Story” writer-director Noah Baumbach.

‘옥자’와 ‘설국열차’를 만들기도 한 봉준호는 이 시기의 가장 인기 있는 존재 중 하나임이 증명되었다. 심지어 골든글로브의 기생충 홍보 행사에서 ‘원스 어폰 어 타임 (옛날 옛적)’의 주연, 레오나르도 디카프리오와 ‘매리지 스토리 (결혼 이야기)’의 작가이자 감독인 노아 바움백 등 경쟁영화로 부터도 지지자들을 끌어모았다.

“We never expectedall this,” Bong said then. But now that “Parasite” has made Oscar history, it’sclear that traditional expectations should be thrown out the window. In apost-“Parasite” world, the best-picture winner can come from anywhere.

봉준호 감독은 그 당시 “우리는 이 모든 것을 예상치도 못했습니다”라고 했다. 하지만 지금은 기생충이 오스카의 역사를 만들었고 전통적인 기대는 창문 밖으로 던져져야 할 것이 분명하다. ‘기생충’ 이후의 세상에서 최고의 작품상은 어디서든 나올 수 있다.
