The country, which was more greedy than any other country to make African colonies, was Britain. It has even been greedy for the Boer people's settlements, who had already been living in Africa for 100 years.

Britain was also greedy for Transval. Cecil Rose, the Governor-General of Cape Colony, sent the British people north of Transval and Orange Free State to create a colony called Rhodesia. The two countries founded by the Boer were put between British colonies.

In October 1899, a war broke out when Britain finally sent soldiers to Transval. This is called 'the Boer War'.

Not long after the war began, thousands of Bore's soldiers attacked the Cape Colonial border city of Mafecking. The British troops surrounded by Boers are in a difficult situation. But the British army succeeded in defending for hundreds of days. In addition, it attacked and took away Transval and Orange Free State one after another.

After that, as the Boers continued to resist, they locked them all up in the camps, and didn't give them food, and didn't treat them even if they got sick. Because of that, more than 20,000 people were killed in only this camp.

그 어떤 나라보다 아프리카 식민지 만들기에 욕심을 부린 나라는 영국이었어요. 심지어 이미 100년 전부터 아프리카에 들어와 살고 있던 보어 인들의 정착지에까지 욕심을 냈어요.

영국은 발 빠르게 보어 인들의 케이프 식민지를 점령하였고 그곳이 대영 제국의 땅이라고 주장했어요. 그러자 보어 인들은 영국의 지배를 받는 게 싫어서 자신들이 일구어 놓았던 식민지를 버리고 더 북쪽으로 올라가 ‘오렌지 자유국’과 ‘트랜스발 공화국’이라고 불리우는 식민지를 다시 만들었어요. 그러고는 이렇게 말했어요.

“우리는 네덜란드에서 온 사람이 아니라 아프리카의 유럽 사람으로 살아가겠다!”

영국은 트랜스발에도 욕심을 냈어요. 케이프 식민지 총독 세실 로즈는 영국 사람들을 트랜스발과 오렌지 자유국의 북쪽으로 보내서 로디지아라는 식민지를 만들었어요. 보어 인이 세운 두 나라는 영국의 식민지 사이에 끼인 꼴이 되고 말았지요.

1899년 10월, 마침내 영국이 트랜스발에 군인을 보내면서 전쟁이 일어나고 말았어요. 이를 ‘보어 전쟁’이라 불러요.

전쟁이 시작된 지 얼마 안 돼서 보어 인 병사 수천 명이 케이프 식민지의 국경 도시 마페킹을 공격해 왔어요. 보어 인에게 포위된 영국군은 어려운 처지에 놓였어요. 하지만 영국군은 수백 일 동안 방어하는 데 성공했어요. 뿐만 아니라 트랜스발과 오렌지 자유국 여러 도시를 차례로 공격해 빼앗았답니다.

그런 후에도 보어 인들이 계속해서 저항하자 이들을 수용소에 모두 가둬버린 채 먹을 것을 주지 않았고 병에 걸리더라도 치료해 주지 않았어요. 그러한 탓에 이 수용소 안에서만 2만 명이 넘는 사람이 비참하게 목숨을 잃어야 했답니다.
