Chronic kidney disease patients must undergo dialysis or transplantation, which not only lowers their quality of life, but also increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. There are several causes of chronic kidney disease. Mental health problems are one of several causes, but academic evidence was insufficient, but a large scale genomic analysis by domestic researchers confirmed the association between mental health and chronic kidney disease. Professor Kim Dong-gi of the Department of Renal Internal Medicine of Seould National University Hospital analyzed the genome data of 1 million people and revealed that feelings of happiness, meaning of life, depression, irritability, and sleep are related to the occurrence of chronic kidney disease. The study samples used data from the “Chronic Kidney Disease Gene Consortium” and the “British Biobank”. It was collected from basic demographic information of patients such as age and gender to mental health-related information such as general feelings of happiness, meaning of life, and depression. As a result, people with high feelings of happiness had a lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Happy people had a 31% lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease than unfortunate people. In addition, those who answered that their lives were meaningful had a 23% lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease than those who did not. On the other hand, depression increased the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Those who responded with depression had a 45% higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease than those who did not. The research team also confirmed the relationship between sleep and chronic kidney disease in the genome data of 1 million people. When the sleep time was analyzed by dividing it into three groups: insufficient(less than 6hours), adequate(6 to 9 hours), and excessive (more than 9 hours), insufficient sleep time was identified as a factor that increases the risk of chronic kidney disease. Professor Kim said, “ Mental health has been shown to have an effect on chronic kidney disease.” and “Medical staff should pay attention to the mental health of the patient in addition to the existing medical indicators such as blood pressure and blood sugar levels.” The results of both studies were published in the recent issue of the international journal in the field of kidney “Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.”
