The War of Rare-Earth Element

Electric cars are receiving attention in market these day. Many of famous car companies have announced that they’ll convert to electric car companies. As you all know, electric cars don’t emit green-house gases such as carbon dioxide or pollutant like fine dust. Considering that climate change is a grave matter to humanity and fine dust makes our lives inconvenient, electric cars are obviously powerful substitute of internal combustion engine cars. Of course, there are skeptical responses, too. It’s no use converting only cars into electric ones when more than half of domestic electricity production is depending on coal power fire plant. The plant will emit lots of green-house gases and pollutants. This is why switching to electric car must go hand in hand with ‘energy conversion’using sunlight or wind. There is another strong objection which is concerned with ‘rare-earth element’. The core components of the electric cars are battery that stores electricity and electric motors that power wheels with electricity. Rare-earth elements are needed when producing these. They are very rare metal element. Specifically, there are fifteen lanthanoids such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, samarium, and scandium, yttrium. Surprisingly, it’s hard for twenty-first century digital society to work well without them. Smartphone including iPhones need them in manufacturing procedure. Even wind power generator needs them. In electric motors of electric cars, neodymium is used. When electricity flows in electric motor, magnetic field of certain direction is formed. A magnet spins the wheel, spinning along the magnetic field itself. Neodymium is used to make this magnet. It makes magnet smaller, but its magnetism stronger and this leads to increased efficiency of the electric motors. Getting pure rare-earth element from huge rock is dirty and dangerous. In the US and Europe, it was regarded as declining industry and was gone. Instead, rare-earth element mine was developed in Neimunggu Baotou, China. 45% of world rare-earth element is produced in Baotou. Residents around Baotou had to left because of the extreme toxic substances resulting from the mind development. French journalist Guillaume Pitron pointed this out. The total amount of pollution is the same and it just switched its place. Energy conversion is for relatively rich class, passing on side effects to inferior areas. Furthermore, would it be okay to depend on China only for rare-earth element? Actually, China weaponized resource like rare-earth element when it was in conflict with Japan around Senkaku Islands. Fearing that China might monopolize the rare-earth element market, many nations strived to develop the mine. However, China responded with increasing supply of it thereby dropping its price. Many companies that were developing the mines had to abandon the business for their bottom line. China’s behavior is similar to that of the US in the twentieth century, controlling the oil market. To China, rare-earth element is an oil of twenty-first century. There are many new attempts to earn rare-earth element in different ways. One of them is separating rare-earth element from used electronics form smartphones to airplanes, There is a quite sizable alternative. Scientists have found out that rare-earth element is buried in asteroids. The ateroid 2011 UW that passed the earth in 2015 included 90 millions tons of rare-earth element.
